SPECULATION

Speculation is the pursuit of ideas and their consequences, with surprising but rigorous results. If the criteria for judgement of an architectural outcome rest on its performative qualities, the question “how does it work in the world?” has a speculative corollary from a different frame of reference: “how does the world it comes from work?”

As a design tool, speculation has the productive capacity to create alternative realities.

RELATIONAL DESIGN MODELS

Unlike a representational model, a relational model is flexible and open-ended. It is a suite of affiliated components, operations, and effects that together constitute a unified system of form-making. The relational model is both specific and abstract. It is specific in its internal logic, whereby concept and form mutually reinforce each other. It is abstract in the sense that, architecturally speaking, it is site-less, scale-less, and program-free. Held together by the cohesive relationships between parts, protocols, and states, the relational design model is a condensed database of architectural knowledge, precise and adaptable to various conditions.

PROTOTYPING

Prototyping is the process of translating abstract relational models into architectural configurations. In order to do this, we add program, scale, and site to the mix. While there is no fixed sequence, the internal logic of the model that links form and action predisposes it to certain capacities. And so the first phase of prototyping is often a tandem exercise in form-finding and program-finding.
